The language used to describe sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sexual characteristics varies widely around the world, depending not only on individual characteristics such as age, gender, socio-cultural status, but also on the culture of reference in a specific place at a specific time. However, there are some terms commonly used in the international context.
Some of these terms are included in this glossary, in the hope that it may help to understand certain concepts and to use more appropriate and inclusive language.
Remember, however, that it is always fundamental to respect the autonomy of individuals in self-defining and self-affirming their identity.
